Schools will administer the West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVGSA) for Grades 3-8 this spring. The WVGSA is a test measuring academic progress for students and schools in West Virginia. The WVGSA is an untimed test administered online. All public school students will participate in the WVGSA at the grade level in which they are enrolled, unless they meet the criteria for participation in the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment. Students in Grades 3-8 will take the English language arts (ELA) reading, ELA writing, and mathematics tests, with students in Grades 5 and 8 also taking the science test. Student scores will be accessible to parents/guardians shortly after the completion of a content area test. More information and specific dates and times will be posted at a later date.

Jennings Randolph Elementary was honored to welcome Sgt. D.W. Burge from the Elkins Detachment for a special visit focused on school bus safety. Sgt. Burge spoke with students about the importance of appropriate behavior on the school bus, from staying seated and keeping voices down to treating the driver and fellow students with respect. His message was clear: safe behavior on the bus helps keep everyone protected on the road. Joining Sgt. Burge were some of our Randolph County Schools bus drivers — Nick Corrick, Amy Burge, Amanda Mastrogiuseppe, and Cherral Senic — who shared their firsthand experiences and emphasized how vital it is for students to follow the rules while riding the bus. We’re so grateful for our local law enforcement and transportation team for keeping our students safe every day. Let’s all do our part to make every ride a safe one.

What is Chronic Absence? Here's What Parents Need to Know! Did you know that missing just 2 days a month—excused or unexcused—can add up to a chronic absence? That’s 18 or more days over the course of a school year. Chronic absence affects students of all ages and can have a serious impact on: ✔️ Academic performance ✔️ Reading and math achievement ✔️ Graduation rates ✔️ Long-term success in school and beyond Even in the early grades, every day matters. Students can fall behind quickly and may struggle to catch up—especially in subjects that build day by day. How can parents help? ✅ Make school attendance a priority ✅ Schedule appointments outside of school hours when possible ✅ Keep open communication with the school if your child is struggling ✅ Reach out—we’re here to support you! Let’s work together to ensure students are present, engaged, and ready to succeed. When it comes to learning… ✅ Each School Day Counts. ✅ Every One. Today, Randolph County Schools has 16.87% of its students identified as Chronically Absent. Forty-One Percent (41%) of RCS students have no attendance issues. Let's work to make that number grow by June 4th!

Elkins High School Band Prepares for Assessment EHS band students have been hard at work preparing for their upcoming band assessment, and their dedication is truly inspiring. In a special rehearsal, students from Midland's band, along with EHS faculty, staff, and students, joined in to observe and support the EHS band members. Band Director, Mr. Blake took the opportunity to highlight the deep academic connections embedded in each piece the band is performing—proving that music is more than notes on a page; it's a journey through history, science, social-emotional wellness, and literature. Here's a look at the powerful program: 🔊 Tuning Chorales – A hands-on exploration of sound wave production, acoustics, and how open space alters tone quality. (Physics/Trigonometry) 💙 Stay – A moving piece promoting social-emotional wellness, affirming that "the world is better with you in it." (Capturing Kids’ Hearts) 🌍 Second Suite in F – A neo-classical composition reflecting the emotional landscape following World War I, from simplicity and lament to industrialization and celebration. (History) 📖 Mystery on Mena Mountain – A vivid tone poem inspired by a legend from the Ozark Mountains, capturing imagination and storytelling through sound. (ELA) This was a great day to be at Elkins High School! ✅ Attendance Matters. ✅ Each School Day Counts. ✅ Every One. …and Band Matters too! Thank you students and Good luck with your assessment!

Our brilliant second graders in Mrs. Hughes' class at JRES scrubbed in and performed their very first letterectomies! With gloves on and tools ready, they removed letters and stitched together new words to form contractions like true word surgeons. From turning “cannot” into “can’t” and “they are” into “they’re,” our students showed off their grammar skills in the most memorable way. Experiences like these are what make learning unforgettable—and it’s why coming to school every day matters! Each day is a chance to grow, explore, and be part of something special. Attendance Matters - Each School Day Counts. Every. One. So Thrive for 5! Attend Five days a week and Miss less than 5% of the school year
