Attendance Policy 4110 (July 2024)
Updated Information Regarding School Attendance Laws -
During the 2024 Legislative Session, changes were made to WV Board of Education Policy 4110 (School Attendance). Local attendance policies must follow state law and State Board policy. The focus of this policy is ** all absences are a loss of instructional time**. RCS may no longer recognize “leaves of educational value”. Some families may choose to take vacations or engage in other non-school activities during the school year, including activities that may be of value to their children’s overall education. However, those absences are still absences from instructional time, even when they are worthwhile. Loss of instructional time is an important issue for students’ long-term success. Some loss of instructional time is unavoidable – such as when students are sick or have health-related appointments. Our goal is to prioritize school attendance. The following are the only absence reasons defined as excused under current state law: · Medical or dental appointment with a written excuse from a physician or dentist · Personal illness or injury of the student or a student’s family member (limited to 10 per year) · Death in the family · Judicial obligation/court appearance · Military requirement for students enlisted or enlisting in the military. All other absences from instruction are unexcused. Documentation relating to absences must be provided to the school no later than 3 instructional days after the first day the student returns to school. If documentation is not provided within 3 instructional days, then absences are considered unexcused. Absences may also be submitted electronically. (Visit RCS website for excuse submission links.) Thank you for your understanding and for making attendance a priority. Each school day counts. Out of Zone Form/In-County Transfer Form
